God is bigger than my imagination : I deal in hope

Devotion Not a Teddy Bear God

We like a cuddly god who hugs us close or a rich, easy-going papa-god who provides whatever we ask of Him. We don’t often like the truth of God as powerful, a God of might, integrity and truth who makes demands of those who claim His name. Jesus isn’t a Teddy Bear held or discarded at will.

Isaiah 28:2-3 (GW) The Lord has one who is strong and powerful. He is like a hailstorm, a destructive wind. He is like a thunderstorm, an overwhelming flood. He will throw them to the ground forcefully. The arrogant drunks of Ephraim will be trampled underfoot.

Yet, we struggle with the concept of a God who doesn’t wink at or tolerate sin/evil and who not only allows the natural consequences of our choices to come into play, but also puts those consequences into motion when we continue to resist His grace.

But only this God can make a difference in our lives. Only this God cares enough to hold us accountable even as He holds out a hand of forgiveness, hope and grace. Only a God I cannot control or remake in some comfortable image is worthy of my time and worship.

I am glad my God is greater than my limited vision.
