Poetry: New Year’s Realization

Do I realize the depth of my sin?
Do I let complacency and rationalization win,
Turning my back on the spirit within?
“I’m not so bad.”
“I’m better than her/him.”
Excuses all for a heart and mind
Seeped in rebellion and sin.
The realization hits! “I’m lost!”
“My excuses, at best, thin.”
In despair, I bow without, within.
Beg forgiveness. “Please God,
Come back in.
Take control of all I am
That I might live
Without the raucous din
Of all I’ve done against Your Son.
I give Christ all I am that I might know again
God’s presence, peace and love within.”

My heart rejoices in the truth from which I hid,
Jesus forgives and offers life
And, now, I am forever His
