Devotion The Lord’s Cut

Read Proverbs 3:1-10

Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase; so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. —Proverbs 3:9-10 (KJV)

My minister father used to illustrate his sermons like this…

Once there was a young woman. Alone, she struggled to raise her three small children. Even as a housekeeper for a wealthy family, she barely eked out a living suitable for herself, never mind enough for her children.

One Sunday, she heard a sermon on tithing. “Give 10% of my income to the Lord? ” she muttered, “impossible!”

“Lord,” she argued, “you know I haven’t enough to live on now. How can I give out of what I earn?”

“Trust me,” came the answer. “Trust me.”

Determined to obey, the young woman decided that, for a month, she’d put aside one dollar out of ten every paycheck. At that time, she assessed her situation and was amazed to discover that though she had given up a tenth of her income to the Lord, she still managed to meet her obligations. Humbly, she bowed her head in thankfulness. She had indeed found her Lord faithful.

What about us? What excuses do we use for hanging on to money and things that rightfully belong to our Heavenly Father? After all, He owns everything. All we have comes from Him. How can we say we’ve given our lives over to Him, then hold on to our pocketbooks? Is it so hard to give Him back the little He asks of us?

Help me Lord, to trust You to meet my needs. Help me develop a generous heart, starting with my debt to You.
